China’s lubricant additives market has sustained stable growth in the first half of 2026, with overall domestic demand keeping an upward trend amid structural transformation of downstream industries. As the world’s largest lubricant consumer, China’s total additive consumption maintained mild year-on-year expansion from January to June, supported by automotive, industrial manufacturing and marine sectors.
Commercial vehicle logistics, infrastructure construction and shipbuilding delivered solid basic demand. China’s shipbuilding output dominated the global market in Q1 2026, lifting consumption of high-temperature anti-wear and detergent additives for marine lubricants. Meanwhile, fully implemented China National VI B emission standards drove surging orders for low-SAPS ashless dispersants and anti-oxidant packages, offsetting weak demand for low-end single additives for traditional mineral oils.
New energy vehicles became a key growth driver. Though pure EVs cut engine oil use, hybrid vehicles and electric drive axles generated booming demand for insulation, copper-compatible friction modifiers and low-viscosity special additives, with related product shipments jumping double digits year-on-year.
Despite mild cost fluctuations of base chemicals and intensified market competition, high-value functional additives occupied larger market share, shifting growth from volume expansion to value upgrading. Industry insiders predict stable full-year demand growth in 2026, with domestic brands accelerating substitution of imported premium additives as local R&D capacity improves.
